India: First SA Novel published

2007-11-21 00:00

Ronnie Govender's successful novel, Song of the Atman, has become the first South African novel to be published in India. The book has been released in major book shops all over India under the imprint of HarperCollins.

Maggie Davey, commissioning editor for Jacana Media, the South African publishers of the book, said: “We are thrilled at this remarkable achievement. This is not only a first for Ronnie Govender, but yet another achievement for Jacana Media which prides itself on uncovering South African literary talent.”

She continued, “The book was displayed at the Frankfurt International Book Fair and we were confident that it would come to the attention of major international publishers, especially after the rave reviews it received in the country. Thus, although we were delighted, we were not surprised when we were approached by Saugata Mukerjhee, the commissioning editor for HarperCollins in India. Saugata described the book as ‘brilliant' and was confident that it would do well in India.”

Govender has also completed his memoirs, In The Manure, which will be published in March next year. He is working on a novel based on his hit play, The Lahnee's Pleasure, and is also producing a video series based on the short stories of his Commonwealth Award winning book, At The Edge and Other Cato Manor Stories.
