India abuzz with news of Donald’s new coaching role

2014-01-10 00:00

BLOEMFONTEIN — Allan Donald and Daniel Vettori’s cricket careers may soon align again.

The two earlier served on New Zealand’s management team and current reports from India are they could work together in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL).

Donald, the Proteas’ current bowling coach, consulted to the New Zealand during the previous World Cup, which was captained by Vettori.

The two are now billed to serve on the management team of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Vettori, who has played for RCB and the Delhi Daredevils, will be the coach for RCB’s seventh IPL tournament, taking over the role from South African Ray Jennings.

Donald will reportedly be the RCB bowling coach.

The former South African fast bowler yesterday said his phone has been ringing non-stop since the reports were carried in the Indian media, but at this stage no agreement had been formalised.

The RCB should be making an official announcement on its management team in the near future.

It will be Donald’s third IPL tournament as coach. Last year he coached the Pune Warriors after the year before acting as bowling coach.

Sahara, the owners of the franchise, last year withdrew from the series due to a financial issue it had with the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Pune Warriors ended eighth in the series last year after they only won four of their 16 matches.

RCB made the finals in 2009 and 2011.

They were also in the finals in the 2011 Champions League.

RCB will again be able to call on players like Virat Kohli (India), Chris Gayle (West Indies) and Proteas star AB de Villiers.
