Indian arrival — tell us your family’s story

2010-06-24 00:00

A HUNDRED and fifty years ago the first indentured labourers arrived from India to work in the fields of the Colony of Natal. Their thousands of descendents have helped shape the identity of our province. To honour their contribution, The Witness will be telling some of their stories over the next few months.

If your family’s roots can be traced to those first arrivals, we’d like to hear about it.

It may be a tale of rags to riches or a memory of a hard start that has been passed down from one generation to the next. It may be a story of a colourful relative or a modern account of tracing one’s origins back to India. Perhaps you have a memento in the form of a photograph, a recipe or a treasured possession.
