Indians in ‘Drum’ exhibition

2011-07-16 00:00

AMARANEE Naidu is among the many Indians featured in “Indians in DRUM in the 1950’s”, the latest offering of the Market Photo Workshop, which is an exhibition of photographs carefully picked from the Bailey’s African History Archive.

The exhibition aims to present a revision of conventional representations of the South African Indian community during the DRUM Magazine era.

This exhibition aims to rectify this misrepresentation and assert the presence of the Indian community in South African cultural and political life in the 1950’s and 60’s.

The exhibition comprises a selection of rare and previously unseen images gleaned from the DRUM archives.

A significant proportion of the exhibition is devoted to previously unseen work by Ranjith Kally and G.R. Naidoo, staff photographers based at DRUM’s Durban office.

The exhibition is currently on show in Johannesburg at the Market Photo Workshop at 2 President Street, Newtown. It ends on October 16.
