Indoor cricket a big success

2014-05-30 00:00

TWENTY-SEVEN teams, with one of those visiting from England, took part in the 2014 indoor cricket inter-provincial tournament at Pietermaritzburg’s KZN Action Sport arena in Mkondeni last week.

Matches took place every day from Tuesday through to Sunday, and the success of the event means that the Maritzburg arena is set to host an event each year from now on.

“It was huge and it went really well,” KZN Midlands organiser and inter-provincial co-ordinator, Grant Webster said yesterday. “Some of the guys said that it was the best tournament they had attended in 20 years.”

The PMB arena boasts four courts, all of which were used during the IPT.

The highlight of the tournament from a KZN perspective came in the men’s over 45 category, with the local lads winning their final against Western Province to take gold.

Meanwhile, the central Gauteng side in the men’s over 30 category have now gone 50 games undefeated as they cantered past the combined UK/KZN Barbarians.

The centre will now go back to accommodating social and corporate league fixtures, but attention will soon turn to which of the local lads are selected for the 2014 Premier tournament in Johannesburg that will take place from August 18 to 24.
