Indoor hockey: Pre-season tourney

2008-11-20 00:00

THE pre-season club invitational indoor hockey tournament begins at the YMCA and St John’s today and continues until Sunday.

Quality teams participating from Pietermaritzburg, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban are taking part in the men’s and women’s tourneys.

Maritzburg Collegians’ men’s and women’s teams, PMB Varsity men and women, a GHS Old Girls/Country Districts squad, University of Johannesburg men and women, Tukkies men and women, two Durban Varsity men’s teams, and Durban North Hockey Club’s men and women will all be in action.

The organisers have devised an interesting scoring system instead of the normal awarding of three points for a win and one for a draw. The scoring is designed to reward quality play and penalise players who get carded.

There is also a handicap system in place. Among the innovations are field goals earning three points, a converted penalty corner four points and a converted penalty stroke two points.

• A practical indoor hockey umpiring clinic will be held at the YMCA next Wednesday from 6 pm to 8 pm. It will be conducted by Ayden Shrives and Charmaine Koekemoer and is open to all.

The clinic will have attendees actually umpiring games for the practical component of the session, so takkies and a whistle are required.

(At YMCA only, St John’s will only be used on Saturday): 5 pm: Pmb Varsity vs Tukkies (women); 6 pm: Pmb Collegians vs University of Johannesburg (W); 7 pm: Dbn Varsity vs Pmb Varsity (men); 8 pm Pmb Collegians vs UJ (M): 9 pm: Pmb Varsity vs Tukkies (M).
