Inferno guts coffin factory

2010-03-10 00:00

DURBAN firefighters battled for hours to contain a fire that broke out in a coffin manufacturing factory in the city centre yesterday morning.

The two-storey building on the corner of Brook and the old West Street was engulfed by flames during peak-hour traffic. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

During the fire, parts of the roof collapsed and the floors caved in.

A fireman was injured when debris fell on him. Paramedics stabilised him at the scene.

Firefighters wrapped up extinguishing operations around midday. However, the building has been declared unsafe for occupation.

A team of forensic investigators will investigate the cause of the fire.

Traffic had to be diverted during the mopping up operation.
