Ingeli dhaga draws hundreds of athletes

2011-03-09 00:00

HUNDREDS of athletes are expected to make their way to a farm dam in Harding on Sunday for the tenth annual Ingeli Dhaga swim.

The event is a 500 metres open water swim for juniors while seniors will take on a one kilometre swim.

For only the second time, a full triathlon will be contested between men and women over the age of 16 — an 18 km cycle, a four-kilometre run and a one-kilometre swim.

Chairperson of the organising committee Mark Gallagher explained that the timing of the event has become instrumental to its success.

“We used to clash quite heavily with the Midmar Mile, but since that has been moved forward we really are well placed,” he said.

“The national triathletes have also finished their competitive season so they will all be available.”

Gallagher added that the event has been successful over the years and he expects it will be no different this year.

“We are confident that this year will be good and we are hoping to get even more than 400 entries,” he said.

“We are now in a position where we are hoping for it to grow into a massive event.”

Tickets for the full triathlon are R150; those for the full swim are R75.

Teams of three will be allowed to contest the triathlon with each member taking on a certain leg of the course.

All funds raised from the event will be donated to Westville Preparatory School and Harding Special School.
