Injury-hit Lions still to name squad

WHILE Sharks coach John Plumtree was able to include a number of reinforcements in his team for tomorrow night’s Currie Cup clash at Ellis Park, the Golden Lions are battling with injury and still have to settle on their starting line-up.

The Lions caretaker coach, former Sharks lock Johan Ackermann, has named a squad of 22, but he has two injury concerns and he will only finalise his team today.

Michael Rhodes has been named as a replacement for injured lock Hendrik Roodt. But Rhodes is a doubtful starter and Etienne Oosthuizen is standing by.

Centre Alwyn Hollenbach is another who could be forced to withdraw and Jaco Taute could take over in midfield.

What will surprise the Sharks is that former Bok Butch James is not being considered as a replacement and they will be delighted that Taute is not at fullback.

Plumtree has singled out Elton Jantjies as a key figure in the Lions line-up and said that countering the flyhalf was the key to upsetting the Lions.

“Elton’s got a great skill set,” he said. “He can play deep, he can play flat. He has an excellent tactical kicking game and his goal-kicking is accurate.”

The Sharks’ commercial manager Rudolf Straeuli told The Witness last week that discussions had been held with Jantjies and his agent about a possible move to Durban following the Lions’ relegation from Super Rugby.

The game kicks off at 7.10 pm.
