Inland Premier League club cricket resumes

2009-01-09 00:00

AFTER the festive-season break, the KwaZulu-Natal Inland Premier League club cricket action returns this weekend.

On Sunday, reigning league champions Varsity travel to Ladysmith to play K&L and title challengers Standard take on Orientals at the new Standard Cricket Ground (SCG) at Wanderers’ Club in Aberfeldy Road in Scottsville. This is the first Premier League game at the ground and well worth a visit during Sunday’s match.

Midlands meet Young Natalians at Eston, where the country club’s clubhouse and cricket pavilion were left minus their roofs after the recent storm that left so many people in the midlands and KZN homeless.

In the remaining fixture, Zingari travel to Newcastle to tackle the Northern Districts line-up. The Woodlands-based Lancashire outfit have a bye.

This is the only weekend when KZN Inland players have a chance at match practice out in the middle before their South African Airways (SAA) Provincial Challenge first-class cricket season resumes when they face Potchefstroom-based provincial outfit North West from next Friday to Sunday at the Maritzburg Oval in Alexandra Park.

Highly experienced Inland player and coach Doug Watson will be looking for big performances before he and co-selectors Garry Hampson (KZN Inland manager of playing affairs), Ross McMillan (provincial captain) and convenor Yunus Bhamjee (KZN Inland president) make their final selection for the all-important North West clash at the Maritzburg Oval early next week.

After a break of well over two months at provincial level, Inland will be wanting to re-start their season with a bang in the SAA three-day match against gritty opponents North West from next Thursday, followed by the 45-over clash between the two sides on the Sunday.
