Inland and Griquas evenly poised on day one in Kimberley

IN reply to Griquas’ 302 all out, KZN Inland were 75 for one at stumps on day one of the CSA Provincial three-day challenge match at the De Beers Diamond Oval in Kimberley yesterday.

Inland trail Griquas by 227 runs with nine wickets remaining in the first innings, and the match appears to be evenly poised.

Griquas skipper Aubrey Swanepoel won the toss and opted to bat, a decision that was warranted given the opening stand of 74 in quick time between Aloysius Seleka and Tumela Bodiba.

The latter went on to compile the innings’ top score, his 86 in three hours coming off 136 balls and including 17 fours — a high proportion of boundaries.

Six other batsmen got into the twenties and thirties, but then got out as the Inland attack refused to throw in the towel.

The valuable acquisition that is former SWD all-rounder and swing bowler Rudi Hillermann again proved his worth with four for 49 in 21 disciplined overs, while accomplished wicketkeeper Tim Drummond pouched five catches.

After suffering the untimely loss of opening batsman Mario Olivier off impressive left-arm opening bowler Charl Pietersen on the fifth ball of the Inland first innings, the Pietermaritzburg-based province’s Dolphins pairing of Devon Conway and Bradley Moses cracked 15 fours between them in a perfect riposte to Griquas’ bright start.

At Kingsmead, KZN Coastal were asked to bat and had a century from the prolific Divan van Wyk and half-tons by Khaya Zondo and Matthew Hulett as the mainstays of their total of 327 for five in the maximum 85 first innings overs.

In response, Border were 63 for no wicket at the close, 264 runs in arrears. With the full house of wickets intact, Coastals were left to reflect on Yusuf Abdullah’s five overs costing him 43 runs.
