THE defending champions KZN Inland were made to work hard for their two wins on day one of the SA U18 Boys’ Interprovincial Hockey Tournament at Maritzburg College’s Pape’s Astro and the AB Jackson Greenfields Turf yesterday.

Inland struggled against a feisty Eastern Gauteng, who were ranked underdogs yet led 1-0 until 11 minutes from the end before going down 3-1, thanks to a Grant Glutz hat-trick for the host province inside nine minutes.

Earlier, Inland accounted for Western Province B 4-2, a side not overawed by the big names against them. Glutz netted another hat-trick (two FG, one PC) with Keagan Davids also troubling the scorekeepers. WP B turned around 3-1 down and scored their two goals through a Christopher Vlok PC double.

Another side in Pool A who looked good were Border A. Southern Gauteng A look the team to beat in Pool B and had two solid wins, while WP A worked overtime to beat a spirited Boland.

Matches to watch today are Inland vs Coastals (8.50 am, Pape’s), South Gauteng vs WP (2 pm, Pape’s) and WP vs EP (7.30 am, ABJ).

At the SA U18 Academy Rugby Week in Vryheid, KZN lost 11-10 to the Pumas in the late game.

The only result available from the SA U18 Girls’ IPT in Potchefstroom was KZN Inland’s 0-0 draw with KZN Coastal.
