Inland cricket: KZN’s ‘monsoon weather’ bedevils play in provincial challenge series

2010-12-20 00:00

IT was the most frustrating of weekends for KZN Inland as their Provincial Challenge series of matches against Free State were ruined by the weather that left the Maritzburg Oval unplayable for two of the four scheduled days.

Yesterday’s 40-over match was abandoned without a ball being bowled following the downpour in the early hours of the morning.

And the three-day match that ended on Saturday never really recovered from the inclement weather that put paid to any hope of cricket last Thursday.

With day one lost, two days to get through four innings between two evenly matched teams is simply not enough time to realise a result. And so it proved.

KZN Inland began the third and final day on Saturday morning trailing Free State by 191 runs with nine wickets remaining in the first innings, this after the Bloemfontein lads had totalled 263 for seven in their allotted 85 overs, with Inland on 72 for one in reply.

After the solid 71-run opening stand between Mario Olivier and Tim Drummond, who made 49 off 63 balls with 10 fours, the former added 73 with KZN Dolphins cap Bradley Moses in a most impressive Inland top-order start.

Olivier went first, for a solid 68 that included 11 boundaries. However, Moses fell soon after and three wickets tumbled for seven runs, and ultimately five for 35 runs in a disappointing collapse. Through this, Moses’s fellow Dolphin Glenn Addicott got to 50 off 90 balls with four fours and a six. Along with Rudi Hillermann (28) he added 60 for the seventh wicket as Inland reached 241 for nine in their 85 first innings overs. In reply, Free State got to 71 for two in their second innings when final stumps were drawn. Inland picked up 6.82 points and Free State 8.26 points.

Three-Day: Free State first innings 263/7 in 85 overs (L Sesele 36, P Botha 70, S van Schalkwyk 54*, D de Koker 31*; K Chetty 3-50-3). KZN Inland first innings 241/9 in 85 overs (M Olivier 68, T Drummond 49, B Moses 22, G Addicott 50, R Hillermann 28; D Haasbroek 4-54, T Tshabalala 4-55). Free State second innings 71/2 after 26 overs (G Nieuwoudt 37). Match drawn.

Points: Free State 8.26 Inland 6.82.

40-over: Match abandoned without a ball being bowled.
