Inland hockey have firepower for inter-provincials

2013-04-27 00:00

THERE is a sense of eager anticipation in KZN Inland hockey circles as the province’s U21 men’s and women’s teams begin their SA U21 Inter-provincial Tournament (IPT) campaigns in Pretoria and Durban respectively tomorrow.

The tournaments run through to next Saturday’s finals and indications are that both KZN Inland U21 teams have significant firepower up front and quality defenders and goalkeepers at the back.

KZN Inland U21 women’s coach Sihle Ntuli — an exciting provincial player — knows his stuff in the tactical department, while manager Samantha Scott is a senior provincial player herself.

Among Ntuli’s players, the KZN Inland U21 women have an outstanding goalkeeper in Saskia Cressey, a solid defender in Nadia Stella — who has good distribution skills — a rock in the midfield in Lana Kruger, a dangerous striker in Vicki Jonker, and an exciting youngster in current GHS captain Chiree Coetzee.

Inland, in Pool A, need to get off to a good start when they tackle Western Province Peninsula at 4.30 pm at Queensmead in Durban Sunday.

Among their players up in Pretoria, the Inland U21 men have a quality keeper in Joel Barron and a solid defender both in terms of defensive skills and distribution in Lloyd de Kock.

In the midfield, the exciting Zamo Ngubo could well make SA U21 Junior World Cup head coach Darryn Gallagher sit up and take notice, as could 2012 South Africa U18 player Le-Neal Jackson with his trademark long-range aerial passes.

Guided by UKZN director of coaching Fabian Gregory, who is the current Investec South Africa women’s hockey team’s assistant coach, and managed by SA defender at last year’s Champions Challenge, Robin Jones, this KZN Inland U21 men’s team should do well in Pool B in this 12-team competition ahead of next Friday’s playoffs and next Saturday’s classification matches.

At Tuks in Pretoria tomorrow, the KZN Inland U21 men meet Namibia at 2.30 pm.
