Inland in control against Namibia

2014-12-06 00:00

FRESH from outplaying KZN Coastal at the Maritzburg Oval, the in-form KZN Inland cricket team are on the cusp of another decisive Sunfoil 3-Day Cup victory, this time against Namibia in Windhoek.

When the final day begins today, Namibia need an unlikely 344 to win with nine wickets left. Judging by days one and two, Inland are near-certainties to rack up more match points. However, thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon, so Inland need to knock those nine batsmen over sooner rather than later

With Namibia resuming their first innings on 11 without loss yesterday in reply to the visitors’ 303 for nine declared, Inland were quickly in among the wickets and dismissals in the eighth, ninth and 11th overs of the day had the Windhoek lads reeling at 31 for four.

A stand of 36 for the eighth wicket temporarily held up the procession but Namibia were all out for 132 in the 42nd over allowing the on-song Inland bowling attack to take all 30 available wickets in their last three innings. — against fancied KZN Coastal (twice) and now the Namibians — in a meagre 126 overs, a remarkable achievement of a wicket in just about every four overs.

In their second knock, Inland scored at a healthy run rate of just under four to the over and openers Imraan Khan and Abram Ndhlovu narrowly missed out on compiling two century partnerships in the match, putting on 96 this time to add to the 120 in the first dig.

Khan (31), who played one Test for South Africa and made 20 in the Proteas’ win by an innings over Australia at Newlands in 2009, hit 108 against the Namibian attack, his 12th first-class ton, and stroked eight boundaries and a six in his 148 balls at the crease.

The cherry on the top for Inland was left-arm opening bowler Athi Maposa’s late strike that had Namibia teetering on 22 for one in their second innings at the close.

Inland: 1st inn 303/9 dec (I Khan 71, A Ndhlovu 46, Suhail Razack 55; Tiaan Snyman 4-61). Namibia: 1st inn 132 in 42 ov (Gerhard Erasmus 34*; Matt Pillans 2-28, A Maposa 3-31, Abdul Razak 2-12).
