Inland lose to Free State by 32 runs

2010-01-25 00:00

KZN Inland went down by 32 runs to Free State in the Provincial Challenge 40-over match in Bloemfontein yesterday, while KZN Coastal beat Namibia by 48 runs at Kingsmead.

Chasing Free State’s 257 for six, marked by sizeable contributions from opener Divan van Wyk and skipper Jonathan Beukes, plus excellent bowling from Narvaar Harridave, Inland made 225 with captain Tim Drummond top-scoring before falling to a run out.

Regular three-day opener Mario Olivier and Brady Barends made their Inland 40-over debuts. Free State have the luxury — like almost all the other sides at this level except Inland — of calling on a maximum of four franchise players.

The three-dayer ended drawn with Glenn Addicott’s 104 the last day’s highlight.

With the second day allowing under two hours’ cricket due to inclement weather, the only likelihood of a result would have been Free State engineering a dramatic Inland collapse, but Addicott — with a little help from his friends — put paid to that thought.

Coastal’s one-day win was built on the in-form Jon Kent’s 63 and the seam and pace pressure of Saidi Mlongo, Viyash Gobind and Quinton Friend.

And it was back-to-back wins for Coastal after their 155-run victory in the three-day affair, highlights being Kent’s 158*, Khaya Zondo’s 100* and left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj’s amazing match figures of 9-71.
