Inland meet Boland in semi-finals

KZN Inland are on the brink of arguably the finest achievement in the province’s history when they take on Boland in the SA Airways Provincial Challenge 45-over semi-finals in Paarl tomorrow.

“The guys have done well, but [tomorrow] is a new game and we are fired up to put in a good performance,” Inland player/coach Doug Watson told The Witness.

Watson has happily sat out the last couple of matches.

“It’s about finding players to take Inland cricket forward,” he said. “Look at opening batsman Mario Olivier, who nearly made a first-class hundred on debut against Namibia the other day.”

Inland have built up momentum with the wins over Namibia and the Mumbai Indians, and captain Ross McMillan is in upbeat mood.

“It has taken a while for the players to get used to their roles and we have a more settled unit now, which makes it easier to captain the team,” McMillan said.

In their pool matches, Boland won all six matches bar one, a seven-run defeat to KZN Coastal, while in Pool B, Inland lost to Western Province by 45 runs, beat Free State by seven wickets, lost to North West by 20 runs (Duckworth-Lewis method), beat Border by 38 runs, lost to Northerns by nine wickets and beat Namibia by 57 runs.

Glen Addicott, Tim Drummond (both with the bat), Morne van Vuuren (with bat and ball) and Ross McMillan, Richard Hlela (both with the ball) have starred for Inland in the 45-over arena, while the rest of the side have played those vital bit-parts that make up the whole.

In tomorrow’s other semi-final, Pool A runners-up KZN Coastal meet Pool B winners Western Province at Newlands in Cape Town. The final is scheduled for the following Saturday.
