Inland take easy win off Namibia in 40-over bash

2010-03-09 00:00

KZN Inland won their Provincial Challenge 40-over match against Namibia by 83 runs in Windhoek on Sunday, and earned a bonus point in the process.

Asking Inland to bat was a mistake as captain Tim Drummond and Mario Oliver put on 64 before the top-order increased the momentum, with Kyle Nipper hitting 54 off 50.

The 226-run target was too much for Namibia as no one reached 20 in the face of pressure from both ends and in the field. Calvin Savage, the 17-year-old Maritzburg College opening bowler, had a fine four days on debut, picking up two vital middle-order wickets in quick succession — both caught behind — and returned Inland’s best figures to add to his four encouraging first-class sticks in the drawn three-dayer.

At this early stage of his career, the SA Schools cricketer is already an intelligent exponent of the art of swing and seam bowling, and he is sure to go places in the game.

There are no Inland players in the top 20 bowling and batting averages in the three-day competition, while batsmen Chad Barron (10th) and Mario Olivier (19th), off-spinner Bradley Moses (12th) and seamer Narvaar Harridave (20th), as well as wicketkeeper Drummond (first) feature in the 40-over rankings.

Inland are still in 14th and last place on the three-day log and have a break this weekend. The following weekend, in the first of their remaining two matches, they face the unenviable task of trying to make up lost ground against log leaders Eastern Province in Port Elizabeth.

EP are an outright victory plus bonus points ahead of second-placed Gauteng, and they will be in no mood to relinquish their grip on the trophy.

On paper at least, the 40-over clash with EP the following day should see Inland — more comfortable in the limited-over arena — in with a better chance as the Eastern Cape men lie seventh to Inland’s 11th and have secured one more victory and a bonus point (six points in all) compared to captain Drummond’s side.

But in the last round at the Maritzburg Oval against Northerns from March 25 to 28, coach Doug Watson’s Inland squad have a massive challenge on their hands.

Northerns are in third spot behind EP and Gauteng in the three-day competition and lead the 40-over race by three points from their neighbours across the Jukskei River, Gauteng. With the 40-over title in Northerns’ grasp, just like EP in the three-day competition, they won’t lack motivation either.
