Inland’s Barends joins SA elite as Northerns fall under his fire

BRADY Barends joined an elite group of bowlers in South African cricket history when he took a stunning nine wickets for 68 runs to inspire KZN Inland to a 24-run victory in the CSA Provincial Three-Day Challenge match at the Maritzburg Oval on Saturday.

Chasing 206 to win, the powerful Northerns batting line-up ran into a formidable opening bowler in Barends (21) who bowled a marathon 23 overs virtually unchanged to fire the Pretoria lads out for 181 and ensure Inland’s first three-day victory in more than a season.

The super-fit Barends, who plays for the Woodlands-based club Lancashire in the Inland Premier League, ended with remarkable match figures of 12 for 107.

“We had nothing to lose and I told myself to run in hard and keep the ball in good areas, but if you had said I would walk off with nine wickets [in the second innings] I would have said you were nuts,” Barends said.

“Coach Doug Watson, captain Kyle Nipper and the boys kept me going and when you are doing it for the team you get the personal rewards as well.”

It was especially sweet for an elated Inland and their supporters, as they have held their own in the batting department, but battled to bowl teams out in recent years.

Barends wrote himself into the history books with the fourth-best bowling figures in the fourth innings of a South African first-class match. He joined an elite group that includes legends like Mike Procter and Hugh Tayfield.

The Durban-born Barends is also only the sixth bowler in history to take the first nine wickets to fall in an innings in South African first-class cricket.

It was the DHS product’s sixth first-class match, having made his debut for Inland eight months ago.

Another remarkable point is that Barends achieved the feat without the support of his new-ball partner Athi Maposa, who was unable to bowl at all due to a back strain suffered in Northerns’ first innings.
