Insurance fraud: couple sentenced

2011-08-23 00:00

AN Umzinto couple have been received suspended sentences for fraud after the wife made a false claim on a life policy that her husband had died.

Silindile Crayola Ndimande, an employee at the Umzinto Ambulance Services, and her unemployed husband, Mathela Richard Ndimande, were arrested and charged with the crime on Sunday.

On September 9, 2010, Ndimande made a claim on Sanlam policy of R30 000 that her husband was dead, but investigations revealed that the husband is alive and that the couple planned to defraud the company.

They appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court yesterday for sentencing.

The wife was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with the entire sentence being suspended on conditions.

The husband was fined R4 000 or five years in prison with half the sentence suspended on condition he is not convicted of any other crime of dishonesty.
