Intercity: good show from KZN Inland teams

2011-11-17 00:00

KZN Inland clubs Standard, Varsity and Midlands won well in the first round of KZN Intercity T20 action, although the ease of victory suggests the Durban sides didn’t bring their A-games or A-players to the KZN capital for this one.

Former Inland all-rounder Morné van Vuuren had a remarkable match for Midlands against DHS Rhythm, smashing 85 and taking five wickets for 20.

Defending champs Standard and 2010/11 runners-up Zingari remain neck-and-neck in the KZN Inland Premier League title stakes, with both having earned 19 points after five rounds, suggesting the chase for honours is going to be as close as it was last season.

Varsity lie in third place with 16 points from five outings, while lurking dangerously in fourth spot are the Eston-based Midlands outfit who have 13 points from just three outings.

In the following order, the Woodlands-based Lancashire, Young Natalians, Northern Natal and Northern Districts make up the numbers.

There are no Inland Premier League matches this weekend because of the KZN Inland Inter-District Week and the Provincial Challenge matches against Eastern Province.

The Inter-District Week runs from today through to Saturday, with matches being played at Collegians, Eston, Wanderers, Woodlands and Richmond.

Teams taking part are East Griqualand, Dundee, Northern Natal, two Maritzburg Cricket Association sides plus Southern Districts, Northern Districts and Midlands. This week is a popular affair as it brings the province’s country cricketers to town for their annual get together and much fun is had by all.

Meanwhile, KZN Inland lie third in the five-team central division of the SA Women’s Provincial League. Inland’s two matches have seen them beat Griqualand West by seven wickets and lose to Free State by five wickets. Second-placed KZN Coastal lost to Griquas by one run and beat Free State by 182 runs.

Chatsworth Sporting lead the KZN Coastal Premier League ahead of second-placed Crusaders.
