Intimidated teachers to return

2010-03-09 00:00

SCHOOL will resume tomorrow in Nsikayezwe in Ngedengede, Ladysmith, where teachers have been staying away to protest about attacks on them near and at the local school.

Teachers met the community and local induna on Sunday, facilitated by the MECs of Education and Community Safety.

Teachers said they were being mugged and hijacked on the way to school.

Money was stolen from teachers and pupils inside classrooms and even the roads leading to the schools were being barricaded at one point, they added.

Some teachers were allegedly robbed at gunpoint.

However, the last straw allegedly came when a teacher was beaten by a parent in full view of other people.

It is believed that some of the parents and members of the community are hostile towards the teachers since they are from outside the area.

KZN Education MEC Senzo Mchunu met the teachers yesterday after talks with the community.

He said the teachers have agreed to go back to school if the department and all stakeholders commit to improving their working conditions.

Mchunu said part of the safety package agreed upon was the presence of police and the visibility of patrol officers.
