Intruders enter through roof, rob 76-year-old in Montrose

A 76-YEAR-OLD Montrose woman who was attacked at her home by two men who got in through the roof, is still in shock and receiving treatment for her injuries.

On Friday evening last week, the woman was in her kitchen in Anne Stafford Road in Montrose when she was confronted by the two unknown men.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan, the men threatened her and punched her, demanding the keys to her safe and cash.

“They removed her rings, ransacked the room and fled from the scene, taking the victim’s safe containing several pieces of jewellery valued at about R100 000,” said Jeevan.

The family asked that her name not be revealed as they fear victimisation by the robbers.

Her son told The Witness that she was preparing supper when she was confronted by the robbers.

He said they gained entry to her home by cutting the fence, climbing onto the roof and removing tiles. They entered the roof and from there went into the house via the trapdoor. “They then went to the kitchen where they demanded jewellery from her.”

He added that his mother managed to free herself and contacted him and the police.

The woman is still bruised as a result of the assault and she visited a hospital yesterday for treatment.

Jeevan said police are appealing to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact Detective Warrant Officer Bimal Bramdutt from Town Hill police at 033 845 7794 or 083 510 3053.

Any witness/informant who wishes to remain anonymous may contact Crime Stop on the toll-free number 08600 10111.
