Invictus: Golden Globe nominee and raking in millions in SA

2009-12-19 00:00

INVICTUS, which was nominated for three Golden Globe awards this week, is also charming filmfans around South Africa.

More than 48 000 people paid to see the film, which is directed by Clint Eastwood (best director nominee) and stars Morgan Freeman (best actor, drama, nominee) and Matt Damon (best supporting actor, drama, nominee). It raked in R1 520 012 on its first three days of release in South Africa.

This is the biggest opening in South Africa for a Clint Eastwood film and one of the biggest openings in South Africa for a drama, coming in ahead of movies like Blood Diamond and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Shot on location in South Africa, Invictus tells the inspiring true story of how newly elected South African president Nelson Mandela (Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Damon) to unite the country.

Believing he can bring his people together through sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s rugby team as they make a run to the 1995 Rugby World Cup final.

The South African cast includes Tony Kgoroge, Patrick Mofokeng, Matt Stern, Leleti Khumalo and Marguerite Wheatley.

The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be presented on January 17 in Beverly Hills.
