Iron rod killer: Sentence today

2011-10-10 00:00

SIHLE Mhlongo, who recently pleaded guilty to beating a young pregnant woman to death with an iron rod in a case that shocked Pietermaritzburg, is expected to be sentenced today.

Nompumelelo Ndlovu, who was seven months’ pregnant, was attacked as she walked along Boom Street with a friend, Nokuthula Ndlovu, on August 17, 2009.

Mhlongo said in his plea statement that he was pushing a wheelie bin full of scrap metal that he was going to sell at a scrap metal yard. A car driving past knocked the bin and two women laughed at him.

“I become very angry. I decided to take the iron rod from my trolley and followed them. When I reached them I never said a word. I struck one of them with the rod on the head. I cannot recall how many times I struck her, but it was more than one time.”

Mhlongo said police arrived as he was assaulting Ndlovu and he was ordered to stop, but he attacked the police and they shot at him. He was arrested and taken to the prison hospital for treatment.

He added that he is remorseful for his actions and asked the court to show mercy on him.

Nokuthula Ndlovu said the attack was unprovoked and unexpected.
