‘Isidingo’ toasts 4?000th episode

2014-10-01 00:00

SABC3 soapie Isidingo will broadcast its 4 000th episode tonight.

The dramas of the people of Horizon Deep first aired on Tuesday, July 7, 1998. Since then the show has grown to have a fan base extending as far afield as Tanzania and Uganda.

The show has also survived a fire that destroyed many of the iconic sets.

“It is a remarkable milestone,” managing director of Endemol SA Sivan Pillay said. “For 4 000 episodes Isidingo has entrenched itself as a credible show with stories that relate to South African society by encompassing the ideal of one nation viewing.

“We hope to entertain fans for many years to come.”

Executive producer Pumla Hopa, who has been with the show since its first episode, added: “We would like to thank SABC3 and our viewers for their continued support.

“We love being part of the South African TV landscape and being able to have a positive influence in people’s lives on a daily basis. The journey has been exciting and we look forward to continue participating as a major contributor in the narrative of South Africa as we continue growing as a country.”

Isidingo is broadcast at 7 pm weekdays on SABC3.

• Over the years Isidingo has achieved several memorable firsts.

It was the first soapie to deal with racism; to have intercultural relationship; to explore gay marriage; and to have an HIV positive character.
