‘It feels like I’m in a fight’

CAPE TOWN — South African cricket captain Graeme Smith has revealed a secret about fast bowler Dale Steyn.

Steyn’s mood on the field, he said, varies from being angry to being terribly angry.

Steyn, however, yesterday said he does not really get angry on the field.

“It is probably more a case of focused aggression. I have to get myself worked up to be able to bowl a session like the one I bowled in Port Elizabeth.

“It is a question of getting me in a mood where it feels as if I have been in a fight,” he said yesterday.

“When I think about teddy bears while running in, I will bowl full deliveries to the batsmen and will not get rid of any of them. I must feel as if I have been in a fight. It’s not necessary to shout at the batsman but my body language must be as if I am ready for a fight.”

Steyn said the passionate way he celebrates when he has taken a wicket is characteristic of his mood at the time.

“When I have worked myself up to such a level and I take a wicket, my veins start pumping and they look as if they are going to burst. That’s when I am at my best.

“It is somewhat embarrassing to watch the highlights on TV and see how I carry on, but that’s when I am at my best and as long as I perform at my best for my country, it does not matter. Hopefully it will remain like that for a long time,” said the quickie.
