It’s all systems go for the Comrades up run in 2013

IT’S all systems go for the 88th running of the Comrades Marathon next year. This is an up run, on Sunday June 2.

Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) race director Johan van Staden has reminded athletes that the entry process started on September 1 and closes on November 30.

Said Van Staden, “There is an 18 000 entry cap and if that is reached before the closing date for entry, no extra entries will be accepted. The Comrades is enjoying much interest from South African and overseas runners and everyone is on the same level when it comes to entering. No preference is given to anyone and if you miss the cut or leave it late, you miss out. Plain and simple. The message is to get the paperwork done, knowing you are on the start line come race day.”

As an incentive to encourage athletes to enter early, the CMA has implemented the “early bird” scheme, offering a fee of R300 for those entering before September 30. From October 1, the fee increases to R320 until closure. Runners from the rest of Africa pay R500 and overseas entrants lay out $180 (about R1 500).

“Our local athletes are the heroes of the race and the folks who make the event what it is every year. To show our appreciation to them, we introduce the early bird process to encourage them to keep our great race alive and well,” said van Staden.

Next year’s race starts outside the Durban City Hall at 5.30am, finishing 86,9 km and 12 hours later at the cricket oval in Pietermaritzburg.

Organisers have asked entrants to carefully check entry forms and ensure all relevant information is correctly completed.

Entries can be made in the following ways:

• Online at the Comrades website at

• At Mr Price Sport, Home and clothing stores countrywide.

• Posting a completed form, with proof of payment, to CMA, PO Box 100621, Scottsville, 3209.

• Handing a completed form, with payment, to the CMA office, at Comrades Marathon House, in Scottsville.

Entrants are advised they can enter the Comrades before having done a qualifying race. Qualifying details must be submitted to the CMA by May 6, 2013.
