It’s full taps at Mason’s

2012-08-25 00:00

MASON’S Mill today offers spectators a chance to marvel at the purest motor sport: regional rallying.

Unlike F1, rallies are often free to watch and relatively cheap to compete in, and there is so much room for error in rallying that it is very easy to crash — a thrill for the fans. Today’s race at Mason’s is the fifth of eight rounds in the CTH Transport rallysprint series.

Hosted by the Natal Motorcar and Cycle Club, the series is still wide open, and today’s technical, dual-service track will not make it any easier to predict 2012’s winner.

Scotty’s Plant Hire has levelled a special six-kilometre stage that will test both driver and navigator on 20% tar and 80% dirt.

Each team will complete the stage six times, with two-minute intervals between cars. Gates open at 8 am, with racing to start at 10 am until about 4 pm, followed by prize giving. A DJ will keep the crowd entertained and updated with stage times.

• Entry costs R20 with kids under 12 free. Three lucky entry tickets will also win a ride of their life in a rally car after the race has finished. Food and drinks will be on sale.
