It’s not funny any more

2009-12-12 00:00

PERHAPS it is time that the Dolphins installed a temporary roof over Kingsmead — or wherever they play, really — because they cannot go on like this.

Rain — for the umpteenth time this season — meant that there was more action in the dressing rooms and dining halls than on the field yesterday as the Dolphins and the Warriors were left frustrated by the rain.

If it wasn’t so serious, it would actually be quite funny. But the truth is that the Dolphins are watching their four-day campaign being washed away by the most sustained spell of precipitation ever seen at Kingsmead. Where was this deluge of downpour when the Proteas needed saving from the brutal Mitchell Johnson earlier this year?

Coach Graham Ford, with no hint of a smile, said he had seen more rain in the last two months than he had in two years at Kent — in England!

Instead of watching a keen tussle between Imraan Khan and Lonwabo Tsotsobe, those who hung around stayed awake by debating the merits of players not eating Durban’s feisty curries at lunch in order to stay nimble on the field.

It really was that bad.

More is the pity for the players, though, because yesterday’s hotpot certainly hit the right spots on an otherwise grim day for sports lovers.

But as these are the sports pages and not the culinary section, perhaps one should mention that there was an hour-and-a-half of play.

In that brief window of opportunity, Quinton Friend ran through the visitors’ tail to bag a deserved five-wicket haul (5/59), with Johann Louw supporting him well with 3/52 as the Warriors were bowled out for 248.

The Dolphins, in two short spells, got 23 without loss as the rain just refused to go away.
