It’s tax deadline on Friday

2012-11-19 00:00

TAXPAYERS who fail to submit their annual income tax return by Friday (23 November) will face significant penalties, tax authorities have warned.

Sars spokesperson Adrian Lackay told The Witness that no extensions will be granted.

“We did away with that a while ago.”

Taxpayers who have an annual taxable income of between R0 and R250 000 could be hit with a penalty of R250 per month for failing to submit the outstanding return.

The penalty for taxpayers who have an annual taxable income of between R250 001 and R500 000 is R500 per month, while a R1 000 per month penalty will be levied on taxpayers with an annual taxable income of between R500 001 and R1 million.

Taxpayers who have been procrastinating have had more than four months to submit their returns.

The tax season was launched on 1 July 2012. The deadline for manual submissions was 28 September 2012.

Tax manager at Legal & Tax, Johan Swart said a significant number of taxpayers have outstanding arrears.

“Last year SARS embarked on a bulk registration process…to get as many taxpayers registered as possible. However, in the past many people were not aware that they had to be registered … and that they owe SARS money from those years. That is where a lot of the arrears’ cases come from,” Swart said.

He added: “I appeal to all taxpayers to submit, even if it is not a perfect submission and you have doubts. At least you will avoid the penalties. You can request a correction later on. It’s not a very difficult or complicated process.”

The vast majority of returns are filed using eFiling.

According to SARS’ statistics, only 5 422 returns of the total number of more than 3,7 million returns submitted thus far have been submitted in the manual (paper) format.

SARS said that with about one week to go, the latest figures (as at 14 November 2012) showed that there was a 20% increase in the number of returns received compared with the same period last year.
