It’s time for Varsity Sports fever

2012-11-29 00:00

VARSITY Sports fever will grip the South Coast this week with a street parade through Margate today to mark the historic occasion.

The parade, from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm, will signal the start of the Varsity Sports tournaments, which will see the top university sevens rugby and beach volleyball talent showcase their skills at Douglas Mitchell Sports Grounds at the Uvongo and Margate main beach respectively.

Following their epic final in Plettenberg Bay last week, Maties and NWU-Pukke will enter the Varsity Sports Sevens as top seeds in their respective pools. The Stellenbosch side clinched a dramatic victory in extra time last Saturday to deny NWU-Pukke the trophy, and they will face UJ, NMMU, UCT and TUT in tomorrow’s action.

Although the NWU-Pukke side were denied victory in the remarkable final last weekend, they will be determined to bounce back and will start their campaign by squaring off with UP-Tuks, UWC, UFS and Limpopo in Pool B on Friday.

Whilst the two finalists will have their sights set on challenging for the trophy, the rest of the teams will be equally determined to show that they have what it takes to go all the way. Despite the consolation of picking up the Plate in Plettenberg Bay, Kovsies will be focused on proving that they can mix it with the big boys in the cup, and the rest of the sides will be out to apply what they learned in the inaugural competition as well.

It will be a case of double or nothing in the Varsity Sports beach volleyball after severe weather conditions in Plettenberg Bay last Saturday brought an early end to the tournament.

With the unbeaten UWC set to meet an impressive UJ duo in the final, the tournament was hit by gale force winds that halted proceedings at Plettenberg Bay Primary. With the safety of both players and spectators the prime concern, the decision was taken to cancel the beach volleyball tournament, which raises the stakes in Margate this weekend.

Olympic beach volleyball star Shauna Mullin will be in Margate to lend her expert knowledge to the players, while SuperSport viewers can look forward to her commentating on the action and then showing off her skills in an exhibition match tomorrow.
