Jaca Arson: Four in court after attack

2010-07-20 00:00

FOUR men appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with an arson attack on the home of ANC councillor Patrick Jaca at Machibisa on June 23.

Snoti Thikuzi (41), Mduduzi Mkhize (44), Donely Molefe (34) and Phumlani Xulu (33) were not asked to plead to the charge when they appeared before magistrate Divesh Mootheram.

They were remanded in custody for seven days pending further investigations in the matter.

At the time, The Witness reported that forces opposed to the construction of the Edendale Mall in ward 22 were suspected of being behind a petrol bomb attack on Jaca’s home.

Jaca’s wife, Thembisile, told The Witness the family were asleep in the early hours of the morning when she was awoken by a noise and saw what she described as a “ball of fire” near the window. She immediately raised the alarm and the occupants fetched water to put out the fire.
