Jack’s back for WP clash with Sharks

2009-08-27 00:00

ALL Black lock Chris Jack returns to the Western Province second row for Saturday’s top-of-the-log Currie Cup game against the Sharks in Durban.

Jack takes over from Adriaan Fondse, who has been sidelined for five months with a serious knee injury in the only change to the team that beat the Lions at Newlands last weekend.

Province are still sweating the fitness of former Natal Schools flyhalf Peter Grant, who has been battling with knee and ankle injuries in recent weeks.

Grant, who has taken over from the injured Willem de Waal at flyhalf, has not practised all week and missed out again yesterday. Fullback Joe Pietersen ran at flyhalf yesterday, but Province coach Alistair Coetzee said Grant is being rested as a precautionary measure.

Bolla Conradie has been promoted to the match-day 22-player squad because of the injury to back-up scrumhalf Conrad Hoffmann.

The Sharks will name their team today and they are expected to include Argentinian flyhalf Juan Martin Hernandez, who has been out for the past fortnight with an ankle injury. Centre Riaan Swanepoel and scrumhalf Rory Kockott could also return.

The match kicks off at 3 pm on Saturday.

WP: Joe Pietersen; Tonderai Chavhanga; Juan de Jongh; Morgan Newman; Gio Aplon; Peter Grant; Dewaldt Duvenage; Luke Watson (captain); Duane Vermeulen; Francois Louw; Anton van Zyl; Chris Jack; Brock Harris; Tiaan Liebenberg and Wicus Blaauw.

Replacements: Deon Fourie; JD Moller; De Kock Steenkamp; Pieter Louw; Bolla Conradie; Frikkie Welsh and JJ Engelbrecht.
