Jade, girl who touched PMB hearts, dies

2007-11-22 00:00

A close family friend told The Witness yesterday, shortly after being informed of her death that it was a “terribly sad loss”.

He said Jade had become a “legend in her own right and she will live in people’s hearts for many years to come”.

The friend said that Jade’s cancer had recently gone into remission and there was the likelihood of a donor, but she then became “more ill”.

Jade was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in February of this year, and her only chance of survival was a bone marrow transplant.

Many Maritzburgers helped raise money to cover the Preston family’s medical costs.

To name a few of the efforts, her school, Ridge Primary, together with St John’s DSG, embarked on a Wear Blue to Show your Heart is True Campaign.

St John’s staged two concerts to raise funds. Family and friends formed a support club, and cyclists staged a ride to Lesotho to raise funds.

Staff at St Anne’s Hospital embarked on a fundraising drive entitled “Touch Jade”, which held a number of markets. The Touch Jade drive co-incided with the Sunflower Fund campaign, which raises awareness and money for bone marrow donars and the tissue typing to find matching donors.
