Jail time for PMB fraudster

2012-10-31 00:00

A PIETEMARITZBURG woman who admitted to defrauding 15 people by promising them jobs in exchange for cash, was yesterday jailed effectively for seven-and-a-half years.

The fraudster, Hassina Mohammed, has a previous conviction for fraud involving R249 450 which dates back to 2002 and 2003.

She was given a suspended sentence of six years imprisonment in connection with that case in 2007 on condition that she repaid the stolen money to the victims in instalments. However, she failed to pay.

In August, she appeared before regional court magistrate, Rose Mogwera, who agreed to give her another chance to pay and further suspended her jail sentence after Mohammed’s sister said she and other family members had undertaken to meet the repayments.

In the latest case Mohammed — a mother of eight children — admitted that on 15 different occasions between December 2011 and March this year, she defrauded various people of a total of R96 800 on a pretext that she worked for an employment agency and promised to help them to find work.

In her plea, she promise the victims she could secure them work at places like Msunduzi Municipality, Umgeni Water and Grey’s Hospital.

In one case she promised Vinay Govender that she would secure an electricity tender for him at Msunduzi Municipality for which he paid her R24 000.

She told Lucas Zuma she would find him a job as well as a driver’s licence and accommodation for him for R5 000.

Magistrate Paul van Dongen yesterday sentenced Mohammed to six months imprisonment on each of the 15 counts.

He ordered that she must serve two thirds before she could be considered for parole.
