Jason: Catch him live in KZN

2009-05-01 00:00

IT’S that time of that year again. ’Tis the season for screaming teenage girls to make their presence known, as Idols mania wows the fans and drives the rest of the country dilly. And for the first time in South African Idols history, the mayhem will feature a Pietermaritzburger in the finals as Jason Hartman takes the stage on Sunday night.

If you’re not an Idols fan, don’t write off this young man as some pop pawpaw. This guy was birthed in the underground scene, playing the pub circuits and festivals, and he deserves to be where he is today.

If you want to see him in the kind of setting where he started off, there are two Jason Hartman gigs lined up on the Meander during May which you don’t want to miss.

The first gig takes place at the Crooked Inn Pub (Peacanwood) in Merrivale on May 8 along with Gonzo Republic and the Chris White band. Tickets are R80 (pre-booked) and R100 at the door. Food stalls are available and the pub will be open. Jared has more information at 071 137 6008.

The second Hartman gig is on May 21 at Crossways in Hilton, which coincides with the successful, locally-run Bone Idles competition. Hartman’s old man Sam and brother Scott have been two of the judges in the competition, as hundreds of entries have been whittled down to 20 semi-finalists. “Tracy Stark has done a sterling job upstaging Liezel Van Der Westhuizen as the host of Bone Idles,” says pub owner and event organiser Tom Lawson, “while [judges] Gerry Van Rensburg and Sally Hurst have been a little gentler on the prospective stars.”

Sunday will see a huge party in preparation for the Idols final which will be shown live at Crossways. If you want to support Jason and have a good time filled with live music by Gerry van Rensburg and many more entertainers then shuffle along to Crossways on Sunday.
