Jet service grounded

AIRLINK Airline’s 97-seater BAE 146/200 service between Johannesburg and Pietermaritzburg has been grounded since Christmas.

The licence to operate the service expired on January 29 after the Civil Aviation Authority granted Oribi airport an exemption to operate as a Category 6 aerodrome for 89 days from November 1.

Airport manager Jan Erasmus told the city’s economic development and growth committee that bad weather and technical problems had often delayed the flights.

The intention is to operate again, he said, “possibly in May or June”.

The CAA has granted the airport a permanent Category 6 aerodrome licence and the jet will be permitted to fly the route regularly subject to upgrades being made to its letdown procedures and airport navigation aids, Erasmus added.
