Jilted, he raped and killed girl he ‘loved’

2012-02-07 00:00

A 22-YEAR-OLD man pleaded guilty yesterday to raping and killing his 15-year-old neighbour after she had rejected his declaration of love.

Siyethemba Clifford Mdlalose will be sentenced in the high court in Pietermaritzburg today by acting Judge Rose Mogwera.

Mdlalose admitted in a statement read to the court by his legal aid attorney, Ishi Khan, that he attacked and murdered Sibongile Thandiwe Nkosi at Osizweni near Newcastle on January 13.

He said he had previously “proposed love” to her without success. On that day he had realised she was alone at home and saw an opportunity to convince her to become his lover.

He found her heating water on a stove, dressed only in a vest and concluded she was preparing to bath.

When he declared his love for her she laughed at him and told him to leave. “Stung by her rejection I drew a knife … pointed it at her and told her to remain silent.”

He said he was aroused by Nkosi’s semi-naked state and ordered her to the bedroom where he began raping her. But he stopped before finishing the act. As he was leaving the room Nkosi said she was going to report him to the police.

Mdlalose said he had begged her not to, but she was adamant she would see him go to jail.

Overcome by desperation he tried to throttle her. During a scuffle she hit her head against a wall and fell to the ground.

“I took a scarf that was in the deceased’s room and wound it around her head, thereby covering her nose and mouth, before I knotted the ends of the scarf behind her head.”

She stopped moving and he realised she was dead, he said. He then fled the scene.
