Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor great as gay couple

IS it just me or is the whole world going gay?

I can’t even channel surf these days without spotting a fabulous gay guy somewhere in the mix — on every second channel! They’re in every sitcom, drama, soapie and music video. It seems the entertainment industry finally caught on to what I’ve been saying for years: gay folk are the perfect target market for any product. They have the best (and best paying) jobs and generally don’t have to deal with the responsibilities that straight people have to deal with (like kids, for example).

And let’s face it, gay people are just fabulous. There isn’t a single thing they don’t own and there isn’t a single place they haven’t been. If your product can add to their fabulousity, consider it sold — and everybody knows that cultural products like art and film sit high on the hierarchy, so of course, the big studios are following suit.

The latest “gay-friendly” film to hit the circuit is the “dramedy” I Love You Phillip Morris. It stars Hollywood heavyweights Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor — and ironically, tells the story of a gay fraudster who shamelessly partakes in criminal activities to sustain his fabulous lifestyle.

Okay, so I won’t dwell too much of the homophobic undertones of making the gay lead a criminal simply because it was based on a true story — guess I’ll just put away my tinsel-embellished protest placards for gay pride.

The film tells the story of Steven Russell (Carrey) who, after coming out, embraces an over-the-top and very expensive gay lifestyle. He really can’t afford it, so he knocks off a few companies and ends up in jail — where he meets and falls head-over-heels for Phillip Morris (McGregor).

He’s so in love with Phillip that he is willing to resort to some pretty extreme measures to keep him happy (even going back to his old ways).

I must admit, I thought this film would be funnier than it actually was because it is a Jim Carrey movie. But on the contrary, it was more drama than comedy — not that this was a bad thing, I feel that both actors did a phenomenal job.

I wasn’t too surprised about Carrey pulling off playing a gay guy (he has always been quite flamboyant) but McGregor, on the other hand, was a total shock.

McGregor managed to pull off the role in a way that doesn’t ridicule his character, something that’s become the norm in the representation of gays in mainstream film. Also, he’s managed to transform his strong Scottish accent to an American southern one almost perfectly.

Overall, I enjoyed this movie, but my granny (who I watched it with) seemed to look away every time the boys kissed, touched, and even smiled at each other.

This movie is certainly not one for narrow-minded people, but if you consider yourself fairly tolerant — and, if the budget allows — then you should make some time to see this one, darling.
