Jock rescued from gorge

2014-02-03 00:00

THEY have named him Jock.

But you would have understood if Christian van Heerden and Joe Swart had named the dog they rescued from the Krantzview Gorge, Lucky.

Van Heerden and Swart, honourary officers with KZN Wildlife, who patrol the gorge on weekends to look for poachers and invaders, found the emaciated puppy last Saturday.

Swart, said the dog may have been in the area for about two weeks and could have followed hikers into the gorge and then lost sight of them.

He said the Pug and Jack Russel cross was covered in ticks and was very undernourished. “He was stuck on a high rock and was going backwards and forwards.”

Swart said he was a bit apprehensive at first but then reached out his hand and the puppy licked it.

He said the dog was starving and ate all their peanuts, half an energy bar and drank their water.

On Monday they took the dog to the Kloof and Highway SPCA to check whether he had a microchip and to see whether they had a lost report for him.

The SPCA’s Barbara Loubscher said they checked their reports as far back as a month but found nothing. She said the Van Heerdens will be adopting puppy. “We are so pleased that this story has such a good ending and that he will be going to his new home soon.”
