Join the peace walk in honour of Gandhi

2013-09-30 00:00

TO honour Mahatma Gandhi and his teachings, which influenced the world, the Gandhi Committee are hosting their annual Peace Walk next Sunday in Pietermaritzburg, considered to be the birthplace of his freedom struggle.

The walk, which was initiated last year, invites all to come and share in a day of reflection and celebration.

“All the major cities have walks in honour of Gandhi, and we realised we should have one too, as Pietermaritzburg was so significant to his life. It was here, when he was thrown off the train, that he decided to fight for freedom and democracy,” said Paddy Maharaj, the event organiser.

The walk takes place on the first weekend after Gandhi’s birthday, which is on October 2.

“The purpose of the peace walk is to reflect and reinforce Gandhi’s principles, particularly those of truth, peace, brotherhood and non-violence,” said Maharaj.

The walk will start at 1.30 pm from the statue of Gandhi in Church Street to the railway station.

The committee invites all sporting clubs, religious and educational organisations to join the walk.
