Jude Ward: traffic cop's assault case postponed

2011-09-29 00:00

THE trial of a KwaZulu-Natal traffic officer, Edward Xolani Mtshali, who allegedly assaulted a 54-year-old Camperdown woman, was yesterday postponed by the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court.

Mtshali (30) is charged with pushing Jude Ward to the ground, putting his knee on her back and hitting her head on the floor on January 18, 2010.

It is alleged that on the day, Mtshali had apparently tried to pull Law over as she was driving.

She left the N3 highway between Pietermaritzburg and Durban to seek safety at the Camperdown police station because she was scared by Mtshali, who drove “aggressively and irresponsibly”.

The alleged assault left Ward with blood on her clothes, bruises which only came to the surface later and she was sore all over.

The state and the defence agreed that they need a doctor’s evidence, which is crucial in the case, and they asked for a postponement. The trial will continue on December 6.
