Judge orders check of killer mom

PIETERMARITZBURG high court Judge Pete Koen has called for a full investigation into the background and psychological profile of a young Zimbabwean woman who last week admitted she strangled her 19-month-old son.

Viola Mutasa (23) pleaded guilty to the murder of Tadiwe Mutasa at Richards Bay on May 4.

She said in a statement she had been overcome by guilt and the horror of what she had done and confessed to her uncle and to the police on August 31.

When she took police to the spot where she strangled the baby, however, they were unable to find the body, according to her statement.

Mutasa alleged she had been “overwhelmed” by the futility of her situation after her uncle’s wife told her she was not welcome in their home, causing her to take the desperate decision to kill her child.

She had been unable to find work in Zimbabwe and in South Africa prior to the murder.

Judge Koen said he requires a detailed probation officer’s report concerning Mutasa’s background and circumstances, including interviews with family members, in order to arrive at an appropriate sentence.

The case was postponed to December 14 for that purpose.
