Juju farm sells for R2,5 mln?

POLOKWANE — At an auction yesterday, an empty Rupert and Rothschild Classic 2010 wine bottle, toothbrushes and a box of tissues were the only signs that Julius Malema once lived in the farm house outside Polokwane.

The Schuilkraal farm, about 12 km from the Limpopo town, was sold for R2,5 million.

The 139-hectare farm was bought by Gwama Properties for R4 million in 2011. Lesiba Gwangwa, a co-accused of Malema in a racketeering and money laundering case, owns Gwama Properties.

There was no sign of Malema or any of his friends at yesterday’s auction, which was handled by Park Village Auctions.

Callie Calitz, managing director of Vencor feedlots, which is situated on the neighbouring farm, bought Schuilkraal.

Calitz said the farm was a good investment and he would be able to move some of his stock to it.

The auction was attended by about 40 people and bidding started at R800 000.

The four-bedroom house had been empty for months since the sheriff seized it in March.

Calitz said he had never seen Malema on the farm.

The former ANCYL leader told a newspaper months ago that he was farming cabbages there. Dried-out cabbages and a rusted wheelbarrow were all that remained of this enterprise.

Curator Richard Masangani said they had hoped the farm would sell for at least R2,7 million. The contents realised R50 000 at an earlier auction. Malema owes the SA Revenue Service R16 million.

He has to appear in court again on June 20 on racketeering charges and for assault on July 2, after he allegedly hit a man at a party last week.
