July weights issued

2008-06-12 00:00

With reigning Horse of the Year Pocket Power rated six pounds better than any of the other entries for next month’s Vodacom Durban July, there is something of a logjam at the bottom of the weights.

The weights for the country’s most prestigious race were issued on Tuesday with Pocket Power, as expected, lumbered with the maximum of 58 kilograms.

Should he run, he will carry two kilograms more than Australian-bred Our Giant and 2,5 kg more than last year’s runner-up, Buy And Sell. Our Giant is not a certain runner so Pocket Power is set to give lumps of weight. The gelding runs in the Gold Challenge at Clairwood this Saturday and trainer Mike Bass is on record as saying the Gold Challenge had been his charge’s main target for the winter and the July would be a bonus. Pocket Power has yet to win outside the Western Cape.

The highest weighted three-year-old is Gommagomma Challenge winner Eddington who is set to carry a modest 53,5 kg while Daily News 2000 winner Russian Sage has been set 51,5 kg.
