PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma will be spending time with senior citizens in Ivory Park in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, while half way across the world, France’s first lady Carla Bruni will lead a star-studded line-up at a concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Closer to home, here’s what some of our political parties, civil society organisations and state departments in KwaZulu-Natal will be doing today to recognise and celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday and his 67 years of service to South Africa.

• In Nkandla, KZN Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize will be launching the provincial One Home One Garden initiative, aimed at ending hunger and poverty.

• Joining forces with the Correctional Services Department, local NGO Gift of the Givers will distribute 500 blankets, toys and seedlings in Impendle.

• The IFP in eThekwini will visit the Early Morning Market at 11 am where they will meet the leadership, traders and interested parties.

• The leadership and MPs of Cope in KwaZulu-Natal will lead a clean-up campaign in the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban from 11 am to 12.07 pm.

• The Lincoln Meade Community Watch and Crime Prevention Forum is hosting a fun day at Cliffy’s Pub (end of Grimthorpe Avenue). Members of the public are invited to bring a picnic basket, get to know their community and enjoy talks and entertainment between noon and 3 pm (Contact: phone Mike Alvarez on 082 261 5523).

• The Greater Edendale Development Forum’s Peace and Social Justice group will spend 67 minutes with Esigodini orphans at the Emaroneni Catholic Church. The group is hoping to provide a cake and a meal for the children and to distribute food parcels. (Contact: Vusi Duma at 076 536 7710)

• The South African Police Services are hosting Mandela Day celebrations at the Royal Showgrounds. All proceeds are to go towards sustaining the Children at Risk and Back to School Programmes.

The celebrations start at 1.30 pm for 2 pm in Hall 2.

• Senior citizens will be honoured during a party hosted jointly by Shoprite Checkers and the ANC Women’s League at Woodburn Stadium in Scottsville between 10 am and 12.30 pm.

• The Imbali Area-based Management Committee will be cleaning at the Siyaphilisa Community-based centre in Imbali, Unit 1. (Contact: Zama Radebe at 082 628 7049.)

• The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) will be working, in partnership with the Department of Water Affairs & Forestry (Dwaf), to clean up river banks around Pietermaritzburg. MP Buyelwa Sonjica and Msunduzi Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo will be part of the activities, which start in George­town at 1.30 pm. (Contact: Sanco Regional chairman Francis Grantham at 082 3303 158).

• Maritzburg United FC will, together with Amazulu, Nathi Lions and Free State Stars, participate in the annual Mandela Cup at the S.J. Smith Stadium in Durban. The tournament kicks off with the Team of Choice playing Nathi Lions at 9.30 am, followed by Amazulu against Free State at 11 am.

• Two groups of Ithala employees and executives will be visiting Emseni Old Age Home and Ubuntu Children Foundation in Edendale for 67 minutes between 1 pm and 2.07 pm where they will be involved in a range of activities aimed at improving the lives of residents.

• The Msunduzi Municipality mayor’s office is hosting the mayoral games final and prizegiving at 9 am at Qokololo Stadium to promote good sportsmanship and equal opportunity.

• According to Sapa, staff at the KwaZulu-Natal regional office of the Department of Mineral Resources will spend their time at the new Princess Nombuso Early Childhood Development Centre to help clean the premises, and plant trees.
