Justice for taxi owner’s family

2012-06-21 00:00

THE family of taxi owner Bongani Mkhize will now be vindicated, Petrus Coetzee, his wife’s lawyer, said yesterday.

Mkhize was killed by members of the Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit in 2009.

He told The Witness that the family had always maintained that the killing was unjustifiable and they would now be vindicated by the arrests.

In 2008 Mkhize sought an interdict to prevent the police from killing him.

The respondents included the Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC, the national Minister, the provincial police commissioner and the head of the Hawks.

Mkhize died at the hands of the unit the following year.

“We had the evidence. The family had its own ballistics and had its own pathologist. We knew that this was an unjustifiable killing of Mr Mkhize,” Coetzee said.

“Throughout this process we have always maintained that.”

He said the arrest would further strengthen the Mkhize family’s civil case against the police.
