KES the side to watch at record Michaelmas Cricket Week

2010-09-23 00:00

THE 51st Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week begins tomorrow with a record nine matches taking place.

This surpasses the 16 teams who were invited to the jubilee Michaelmas Week last year. The matches will be played at Maritzburg College, St Charles, Collegians, the University, Eston and Alexandra.

Of the visiting teams from outside the province, King Edward VII School from Johannesburg look to be the side to beat and they play against Maritzburg College, the strongest of the KZN sides, Durban HS, Michaelhouse and St Stithians.

Three senior players, all at their third Michaelmas Week — Keaton Jennings captain and SA Under-19 captain, and SA U19 team-mates Quinton de Kock and David Sartor — together with Sheldon Pillay, an U19 SA squad player, make KES a formidable line-up.

Maritzburg College will be missing injured SA U19 player Calvin Savage, but their record this year shows they will be a hard team to beat.

Grey College, St Stithians and Hudson Park all have experienced players in their teams. Grey have Neil Marais and Dwayne Calder at their third Michaelmas Week and they, together with Nic Linde, Corne Day and Nicol Linde, represented the Free Sate U18.

David Leschnick from St Stithians and Chris Abrams, Michael Faasen, Yasser Cook and David Rhoda have all played for Gauteng.

Together with College, Kearsney and Glenwood appear to be the KZN sides with the most experience.

Affies have SA Schools player Thomas Kaber, and the Griquas Development XI have provincial players Thami Mthonxa and Chezley Barnes.

KZN Cubs player Chad Bowes plays for Kearsney alongside Richard Pentecost, Jason Lacon-Allin, Rob Veldhuizen and Josh Perry.

Glenwood’s captain, Sumanth Sunkari, has played for the Dolphins Cubs side and he, together with Dylan Brown, Wesley Atkins and Shahil Bissoon, are all at their third Week.

Other players to notice are provincial U18 players Hilton Mudariki from Michaelhouse and Sashlin Reddy from Westville.

Gareth Dukes from St Charles is at his fourth week, with the following all making their third appearances; St Charles’s Mzamo Cele and Greg Ford, Michael Voysey (Pretoria BHS), Max del la Fague (St Johns), Aerin Ivey and Cody Getz (both Westville) and Nathan Poole (DHS).

The players will be hoping to emulate the 41 former Michaelmas Week players who went on to international cricket, or over 100 players who have played provincial cricket.

Former Week players in the present South African test team are Graham Smith (KES), AB de Villiers (Affies), Hashim Amla (DHS) and Makhaya Ntini (Dale), plus English international Kevin Pietersen (College).
