KFC: final warning over non-halaal food dropped

2012-08-24 00:00

KFC has withdrawn the final warning it issued to a worker at its Maxwell Street branch in Empangeni for bringing non-halaal food on to the premises.

Bheki Shabane, KZN secretary of the United Chemical Industries Mining, Electrical, State, Health and Aligned Workers’ Union, said that the case that Sfikile Nokuthula Buthelezi had lodged with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), set down for September 4, would not go ahead. Buthelezi had lodged a complaint with the CCMA after she was punished for bringing food from a nearby supermarket on to the KFC premises.

KFC seems to have decided on this course of action after another complainant, who was dismissed, won his case against the fast-food outlet at the CCMA. Jabulane Cele (31) was dismissed in June for taking phuthu and bean curry to work. At his CCMA hearing on 10 August, KFC franchise holders Colefax Trading and Yum Restaurants International agreed to reinstate him.
